Most Common Food Allergies

It’s estimated that about 32 million Americans have food allergies that can range from dairy products to tree nuts. Some people may experience mild irritations, while others can get extreme reactions that need proper medical attention. Here are some common food allergies you should know about:

Eggs

If you’re allergic to eggs, it’s probably due to the egg white since yolks are generally considered safe. If you have a severe egg allergy, the proteins in the egg whites can cause reactions such as diarrhea and vomiting. Eggs are typically found in ice cream and cakes, so check ingredients before consuming any of these products.

Crustaceans

If you’re allergic to crustaceans such as lobster, shrimp and crayfish, check your shampoo because it may contain shellfish extract. If not, look out for tartar sauce which contains crustacean shellfish. Leavening agents in baked products may also contain lobster which is a risk for people with asthma who also have seafood allergies.

Peanuts

Peanut allergies can be so severe that they can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition where the airways are restricted. Peanuts are in a lot of products, so you might want to check ingredients in all food products well before buying anything.

Wheat and Gluten

Wheat allergies are quite common, especially among people who have celiac disease. If you have a gluten sensitivity, you’ll notice this right away because it may stimulate an immune response that results in rashes or swelling in your esophagus or small intestine. It can also cause problems with your bowel movements and will give you abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, among other symptoms.

If you suspect gluten might be bothering you, try removing wheat from your diet for a couple of weeks and see if the result is any better for you.
