How to Stay Active During the Day

Staying at home, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and working remotely has made people lazier or less productive than they used to be. The amount of physical activity that the average person would be able to do daily before the pandemic—from simple tasks like walking to the subway station or going shopping—has gone down significantly.

You can get over this by doing a few simple tasks daily that will give your body the physical activity that it needs and help you remain active during the day.

Park at a Distance

Something as seemingly unimportant as parking a little far from your destination can help your body get the daily workout that it needs. When you go to work or to the shop for groceries, get a little walk in.

An ideal distance would be parking a couple of blocks down or a five to ten minute walk away.

Take the Stairs

Elevators and escalators are meant to provide convenience to people in their daily lives but your body will one day thank you for doing things the old-fashioned way and taking the stairs. If you’re visiting a building with a number of floors then try to climb at least three or four floors by yourself if you’re not in a hurry.

If the building is higher, you can take the elevator to a few floors lower than the floor you need to reach and climb up the rest. Climbing stairs requires 8-11 kcal of energy every minute which is better than most moderate physical activities.

Walk While Answering Calls

If you’re working from home, getting some exercise in while working can help you remain more attentive and improve productivity. When you get important calls from work, stand up and walk around the room or your house while talking.

This ensures that the body remains active throughout the day. Taking a walk in your garden can be even more beneficial and the nature helps refresh your mind.

Get a Dog

As they say, a dog is a man’s best friend. Dogs love physical activity and the outdoors. So by getting a dog, not only will you be able to enjoy their companionship but you will also need to take them out on daily walks. Dog owners experience lower blood pressure and stress levels, better cardiovascular fitness and stronger muscles and bones—probably because of how busy they keep you.

You can consult a physician or a fitness expert to guide you better on what other activities you can do and foods you can consume to develop a healthier lifestyle. Taking health supplements can also boost your immune system and provide health benefits.
