Common Causes of Back Pain

Back pain is a prevalent health condition across the world. But sadly, people undermine the symptoms to the point that they worsen into a grave chronic health condition.

Here are some of the common causes of back pain and ways to reduce it.

Poor Diet

Weight increase is generally the result of a poor diet, and weight gain puts a lot of strain on your joints. Adding weight forces our bodies to reorient their center of gravity, putting additional strain on the lower back. Additionally, some types of foods, such as processed foods, fast foods, and saturated fats, can promote inflammation in and around the spine.

Arthritis

In some cases, spinal arthritis narrows the space around the spinal cord, medically known as spinal stenosis, which may lead to developing back pain.

Osteoporosis Spine's vertebrae develop painful fractures when your bones become brittle and porous, which may lead to severe back pain.

Lack of exercise

Less than half of Americans exercise daily—being lethargic and lazy is why many of them suffer from backache.

A small amount of exercise every week can go a long way. Spend at least 30 to 45 minutes exercising two to three times a week to help tone and condition muscles, which can help reduce symptoms of back pain.

Poor Posture

A poor sitting posture can cause severe back pain and muscle stiffness. The back pain worsens as people go on sitting for longer intervals per day—until they get used to sitting with their hunched back leading to kyphosis.

Improper Shoes

You might be thinking how your shoes are related to back pain? Well, ill-fitting shoes have a major impact on your walking posture. High heels, flip-flops, and worn-down soles fail to provide the support your back needs while standing.

Smoking

Smokers are more likely to suffer from back pain as smoking hinders blood flow, reduces calcium absorption, and obstructs bone's growth. This leads to frail and weak bones which eventually snowball into back pain and arthritis.

How to Treat Back Pain?

You need to maintain a good posture and a healthy diet—for a balanced weight. Make sure to shed some extra pounds to lift the burden off your back. Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy body and lifestyle.

If nothing works, try out nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen to reduce and relieve pain. These are different from opioid drugs such as morphine that are used for more severe pain.
